Compress images for a faster site

Around 75–85% is the sweet spot for the web: a large drop in file size that most people cannot see. Below 60%, smooth gradients like skies and skin start to band. Push it to 90% or higher for images containing text or fine line art.

WebP is typically 25–35% smaller than JPEG at the same perceived quality and keeps transparency. Every browser still receiving support can read it. Choose JPEG only when the file has to go into older software that demands it.

Browsers can display AVIF but cannot create it: the canvas export function does not support the format. Encoding AVIF on your device would mean shipping roughly a megabyte of extra code, which we judged not worth the gain over WebP.

It is usually the biggest win available. Camera and phone photos are 4000–6000 px wide, while a web layout rarely displays more than 1600 px. Scaling down to what you actually need, then compressing, beats dropping quality alone by a wide margin.
